Muscat to Salalah by road
The drive from Muscat to Salalah is about 1,000 km and takes around 10 to 12 hours plus stops, mostly on one long highway through the desert via Adam, Haima and Thumrait. Flying takes about an hour and a half, so most visitors fly; the road suits families with lots of luggage, groups, and travellers who want to see the interior.

The route
From Muscat the road runs inland to Adam, south of Nizwa, then on through the central desert on the long highway to Haima and Thumrait, before crossing the Dhofar mountains down to Salalah. Most of it is straight and flat, across gravel plains, with fuel stations and rest stops spaced out along the way; Haima is roughly halfway.
Fly or drive?
Flights between Muscat and Salalah take about an hour and a half, so flying is quicker for most visitors — book a Salalah airport pickup and a driver for your days there. Driving makes sense for families or groups with a lot of luggage, for anyone who wants to stop on the way, or if you want to keep the same car and driver for your days in Dhofar.
Tips for the drive
- Start early and plan around daylight: camels often stray onto the road, especially at night.
- Fill up when you can — fuel stops are far apart in the central desert.
- Carry plenty of water; the interior is extremely hot in summer.
- In the khareef, expect heavy traffic and fog on the mountain section near Salalah.
- Some travellers break the journey with a night on the way.
