Salalah in the khareef season
The khareef is Salalah’s monsoon season, from about late June to September. Mist and drizzle turn the Dhofar mountains green, waterfalls run at Wadi Darbat, and temperatures stay in the mid-twenties Celsius while the rest of the Gulf is in high summer — which makes it Salalah’s busiest time of year.

When is the khareef?
The south-west monsoon reaches the Dhofar coast from about late June and lasts until about September. Low cloud and drizzle settle on the mountains around Salalah, while the rest of Oman and the Gulf are at the height of summer.
When the monsoon ends, the skies clear while the hills are still green — a quieter time for photos. From about October to April, Salalah is sunny and warm, which is the season for beaches and the desert.
What to see in the khareef
- Wadi Darbat — lakes, waterfalls and green valleys east of Salalah, near Taqah.
- The Jabal Samhan viewpoint and the Tawi Attair sinkhole in the eastern mountains — best when the cloud lifts.
- Mughsail and Marneef Cave — the blowholes are at their most dramatic when the monsoon swell is running, though access depends on the sea.
- Ain Hashir, the baobab trees and Taqah Castle on a day around East Salalah.
- Salalah itself — Al Baleed Archaeological Park, the Museum of the Frankincense Land and Haffa Souq, good for a misty day.
Getting around in the khareef
Salalah is busiest in July and August, when visitors arrive from across the Gulf, so book your car, driver and hotel early. Mountain roads are often in fog, visibility can drop quickly, and camels graze beside the roads — one reason many visitors prefer a local driver.
Most sights, including Wadi Darbat, Taqah and Mughsail, are fine in an ordinary car. The Jebel Safari, the Fazayah Beach tour and the Empty Quarter safari run in a 4x4.
Swimming and the sea
The sea is rough during the khareef, with high waves and strong currents, and swimming is dangerous — follow the warning flags and signs. For beach days, such as Fazayah, come outside the khareef season.
Flying or driving to Salalah
Most visitors fly: flights from Muscat take about an hour and a half. The drive is around 1,000 km and takes most of a day, and in the khareef the road is busy with families driving down from across the Gulf. We can meet your flight at Salalah airport, or drive you the whole way.

Yes, if you want green mountains, mist, waterfalls and cool weather in the middle of the Gulf summer. For sunshine and swimming, come between October and April instead.
Swimming in the sea is not safe during the khareef, because the waves and currents are strong. Follow the flags and signs on the beaches.

Book a transfer and your driver meets you in arrivals, timed to your flight. July and August are the busiest weeks, so book ahead.
A light waterproof or an umbrella, a warm layer for the mountains in the evening, and shoes that can get wet and muddy.
