Do you need a 4x4 in Oman?
For most of Oman, no: the highways and the roads to Nizwa, Wadi Shab, Wadi Bani Khalid and the main Salalah sights are paved. You need a 4x4 for Jabal Akhdar, where a checkpoint turns other cars back, for driving in the dunes of the Wahiba Sands and the Empty Quarter, and for mountain tracks such as those to Bilad Sayt and Wakan.

Where you need a 4x4
- Jabal Akhdar — a checkpoint at the start of the mountain road only lets 4x4 vehicles through.
- The Wahiba Sands — the dunes and most desert camps are reached over sand.
- The Empty Quarter (Rub Al Khali) near Salalah — dune driving, 4x4 only.
- Bilad Sayt and Wadi Bani Awf — steep mountain tracks.
- Wakan Village and Wadi Al Abyad — the roads to both are for 4x4s.
- In Dhofar — the Jebel Safari and the Fazayah Beach tour.
Where a normal car is fine
Oman’s main roads are modern, paved highways. A sedan is fine for Muscat and the coast, Nizwa and its forts, Wadi Shab and the Bimmah Sinkhole, Wadi Bani Khalid, Nakhal and Rustaq, and the main sights around Salalah, such as Wadi Darbat, Taqah and Mughsail.
Jabal Shams: car or 4x4?
The road from Al Hamra climbs steeply towards the canyon rim. A sedan can manage it in good conditions, but an SUV is more comfortable, and it is what we recommend for this trip.
If you drive yourself
- Check whether your rental contract covers driving off paved roads — many do not.
- Don’t drive into the dunes without experience: tyres need to be let down, and it is easy to get stuck.
- Watch for camels and goats on rural roads, and avoid mountain tracks after dark.
- After rain, wadis can flood suddenly — never drive through running water.
Travelling with a driver
On a private tour we match the vehicle to the route: an SUV for Jabal Akhdar, the desert and the mountain tracks, and sedans, vans or coaches where the roads allow. Our 4x4 tours carry up to 4 guests per vehicle, and larger groups travel in more than one.

No. Wadi Shab is just off the coastal highway, so any car will do; from there it is a short boat crossing and a walk.
To drive into the dunes and reach most desert camps, yes. Many visitors leave their car at the edge of the desert and are collected by their camp, or come on a tour in a 4x4.
Not strictly — a sedan can reach the top in good conditions — but the road is steep, and an SUV is more comfortable.
Not for the main sights: Wadi Darbat, Taqah, Mughsail and the city are fine in a normal car. The Jebel Safari, the Fazayah Beach tour and the Empty Quarter safari run in a 4x4.
Up to 4 guests per vehicle, so everyone has a comfortable seat and room for bags. Larger groups travel in more than one 4x4.
