Day trips from Muscat at a glance
The most popular day trips from Muscat are Wadi Shab (about 1.5 hours away), Nizwa and its forts (about 2 hours), the mountains of Jabal Akhdar and Jabal Shams, and the Wahiba Sands with Wadi Bani Khalid. Most are full days that start at 7:30 or 8 am, and the mountain and desert trips need a 4x4.

The best day trips at a glance
Drive times are from central Muscat to the first stop, in normal traffic.
- Wadi Shab & the Bimmah Sinkhole — about 1.5 hours. A short boat crossing, a canyon walk and turquoise pools. Any vehicle.
- Nizwa, Bahla & Jabrin forts — about 2 hours. The fort and souq of Nizwa, Jabrin Castle and UNESCO-listed Bahla Fort. Any vehicle.
- Jabal Akhdar — about 2.5 hours via Nizwa. Terraced villages on the Saiq Plateau, around 2,000 m up. 4x4 only.
- Jabal Shams — about 3 hours. Oman’s highest mountain and the rim of the Wadi Ghul canyon. SUV recommended.
- Wahiba Sands & Wadi Bani Khalid — 2.5 to 3 hours. Year-round pools, then the dunes at sunset. 4x4 only.
- Nakhal & Rustaq — about 1.5 hours. Forts, hot springs and date-palm oases. Any vehicle.
- Wadi Al Abyad & Wakan Village — 1.5 to 2 hours. Blue pools and a terraced mountain village. 4x4 only.
- Bilad Sayt — about 3 hours, the last part on mountain tracks through Wadi Bani Awf. 4x4 only.
- Wadi Dayqah, Al Arbeieen & Wadi Mayh — about 1.5 hours. A large dam, pools and palm-lined valleys. SUV recommended.
- Muscat City Tour — in the city. The Grand Mosque, Mutrah Souq and old Muscat, as a half or full day.
If you only have one day
For a first visit, choose Wadi Shab for swimming and scenery, or Nizwa for forts and the souq. Both work in any vehicle, from a sedan to a coach, and you are back in Muscat by early evening.
Mountains: Jabal Akhdar or Jabal Shams?
Jabal Akhdar, the Green Mountain, is about terraced villages, orchards and the rose-water season in spring. The road up has a checkpoint that only lets 4x4 vehicles through, and the trip is usually combined with Nizwa.
Jabal Shams is Oman’s highest mountain, at about 3,000 m, known for the Wadi Ghul canyon and the Balcony Walk to an abandoned village. Both are much cooler than Muscat, so bring a warm layer.
Desert: the Wahiba Sands
The Wahiba (Sharqiya) Sands are the closest big dunes to Muscat. A day trip usually pairs them with the pools of Wadi Bani Khalid and ends with the sunset from a dune, back in Muscat around 9 pm. Driving in the dunes needs a 4x4, and an overnight desert camp can be added.
On the water
From Muscat’s marinas you can go dolphin watching (2 hours), add snorkelling (3 hours), take a one-hour sunset trip along the coast, or spend a morning at the protected Daymaniyat Islands (5 hours). Boats leave from Marina Bandar Al Rowdha and Al Mouj Marina, and every sea trip depends on the weather.
Tips for a day trip from Muscat
- Start early: most full-day trips leave between 7:30 and 8 am, before the heat of the day.
- The Nizwa livestock market is on Friday mornings, but the Grand Mosque in Muscat is closed to visitors on Fridays.
- Cover shoulders and knees in villages, forts and mosques.
- For the wadis, bring swimwear, a towel and shoes with good grip.
- Entrance fees and meals are usually extra on private tours.
